User guides/Quick start
A good instruction manual is hugely important,
as the correct use of the product will depend on it. And for
the users to make the most of all the functions and
performance of the product, they must understand them
correctly.
Many manuals are badly done, some badly written and others
badly explained. Others, too scarce with the information they
provide, which we consider one of the most absurd things a
company can do. Why does it bother them to spend a little more
time and money to produce a fine manual? It is something we
don’t understand.
With a good manual it is a pleasure to start using a product,
and it shows which companies take it seriously. The most
important is that the contents are complete and clear, a good
explanation is fundamental so the users understand it, and you
will almost eliminate the errors occurred during the set up.
The manuals must be up to date, with accurate references,
drawings and pictures. Of course it costs some money to make a
good user manual, to create the content, text, pictures, to
revise it, translate it and edit it, etc. The final cost is
significant but it is totally necessary to have this expense
in the budget of every product.
If the product has a very extensive manual, the most
appropriate would be to make a Quick Start Guide for the
client, who will be impatient to start using the product and
could make mistakes in the process. The Quick Start Guide must
be clear, brief and explain correctly the whole procedure. It
must have the pictures or drawings of the actual product, and
nothing which could lead to confusion. The Quick Start Guide
needs to include warning messages to alert about potential
dangers, and inform that the Quick Start is only for initial
set up and that the user should read carefully the complete
instruction manual to get information of all the
functionalities and specifications of the product and its
correct use.
Many users just read the Quick Start and never touch the user
manual. The point of this guide is simply to show the first
steps in the most comprehensive way. If one were to do a user
manual with the same style as the Quick Start, it would be
four times longer than normal.
User manuals are very important for the product. They are a
part of the product itself, and represent the quality the
company applies to everything related to the product. Some
people don’t read them, they think they know everything, but
they tend to be the clients who break the products before time
by doing something the manual advised no to do. Then they
blame the manufacturer for the damage, which is unethical. The
manufacturer doesn’t always manage to provide a good manual,
but for sure they do it for you to read it -for the product
and also for your own good. It can avoid a number of tedious
situations, even accidents.
Reading the product manuals is not for dummies, as many think,
and not reading them is not being smart. Think, if they
include one, there must be a reason. Not to make you bored
with lines and lines of irrelevant text, but to help you,
protect you, and ensure your experience with the product is as
gratifying as possible.
